“The unexamined life is not worth living.”
– Socrates
It is easy to go through life on autopilot, to collapse into survival mode and to think little about what life is and how to live a good one. The bills pile up, the children are out of control, one crisis barely stops before the next one begins. Even when things are going well, we rarely stop to reflect upon our days, our experiences and the experiences of others. We rarely take a breath to ask the questions that drive us to deeper knowledge, that guide us to a deeper experience of reality.
Thus, our perceptions of what is just, what is ethical, and what is moral gets skewed to what seems right to my preconceived notions, what feels good and makes me happy.
This site, my work, is an attempt to press the pause button, and to evaluate. To ask the questions, both on personal and societal levels. To act as a thorn in the flesh of both my own self, and the societies in which we live.
Who am I?
I am Blake Hart. As for my “credentials” I have a Doctor of Intercultural Studies degree from Fuller Seminary, a Master of Divinity degree from the McAfee School of Theology of Mercer University, and a BA in Religion and Spanish from Mars Hill University. I try to be a good dad and a great husband, but days are long and I fail sometimes.
My Background
I grew up in small town Appalachia, and at one point or another I have lived in Atlanta, GA; Cuenca, Ecuador; Arica, Chile; and now Charlotte, NC. My childhood experience was pretty monolithic. Most people were white. Almost all were Christian. It was well into my elementary years that I encountered someone who didn’t believe as I did. I honestly don’t recall when I learned that some people speak other languages, and I was well into High School before I encountered, knowingly, the LGBTQ+ community. As a white male, then, this led me to believe that my point of view and my experience was normal, was the status quo.
Through studies, city life, and living abroad, I learned that is not even remotely the case. I now seek out and defend voices other than my own. I believe that we each need the voice, experience, and insight of the Other in order to make ourselves better, to complete our own experiences.
Let’s listen and learn together.
