Post-Election Debrief

I’m not the first to say this, and I assume I won’t be the last. But I didn’t want to not say just because it may be redundant. At a point it must reach a critical mass, and the only way to get there is for us all to say it independently and not simply share the others’ words.

What is it I want to say?

It’s time for the church to be the church.

The person who is now president-elect of the United States of America frequently used racist and ethnocentric language, made fun of the physically disabled, and refused to distance himself from white nationalist movements like the KKK. Such behavior has already enabled those racist elements to feel free to come out of the shadows.

Just look at this tweet

Imagine going to High School the day after an election and seeing that graffiti in your bathroom.

Or imagine the countless teachers, pastors, counselors, and others who have had to hold minorities, LGBTQ, or immigrants in their arms, letting them know that they are not alone.

We’ve had divisive presidential elections in the past, but in modern history this is new.

Church, we must comfort those who are scared, speak out for those who have no voice, help those who need a voice to find their own, and share in the suffering of everyone who is in pain right now.

Let’s get to it.
